CNN19980128.1130.0375 NEWS CAPTION senate majority leader trent lott rejected president clinton's social initiatives in the republican response to the state of the union speech. he said the gop is committed to family, faith and freedom. and lott said any budget surpluses should be used to reduce the accumulated national debt and for tax cuts. this chart shows how the income of the federal government over the lapt 30 years has gone up almost 1,000 percent. during the same period , family incomes rose only half as much. government has gotten fat , while families are working overtime just to stay where they were. we believe hard-working americans deserve a break. so our focus in 1998 will be to increase family income by cutting taxes and making government more accountable for the way it spends your money. lott also called for reforming the internal revenue service and the enactment of a simpler tax code.
