Topic: South Korea President visits China

Summary

         President Jiang Zemin met on December 12 with Kim Dae-jung, president of the Republic of Korea(ROK)  and noted the enomous potential for the further development of China-ROK relations.  The two leaders exchanged views and reached a broad consensus on bilateral relations and other issues of common concern. 

         Kim said that the two countries have a long history of friendly exchanges. Kim reaffirmed that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China and stressed that the ROK strickly obverses the "one China" policy. Jiang expressed appreciation for the ROK's adherence to the "one China" stance concerning the Taiwan issue.

           This is Kim's first visit to China since he became ROK president this Feburary, who brought a 250-member delegation with him for a five-day state visit here. Kim and his party will visit Shanghai, China's largest economic center in addition to Beijing after the talk with President Jiang.
