SUMMARY
The 1998 Shanghai Open, also known as the Heineken Open, took place October
5-11 at the newly-constructed Shanghai Xian Xia Tennis Center. American
Michael Chang defeated Croatian Goran Ivanisevic in the final round of
the tournament, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Chang was the tournament's number two seed,
while Ivanisevic held the top seed. The upset victory was Chang's 12th
Asian title, which set a new world record.
