SUMMARY

To advance to the World Series, the Yankees swept the Texas Rangers in the divisional playoffs, and defeated the Cleveland Indians 4-2 in the American League Championship Series. The Padres beat the Houston Astros three games to one in the divisional series, and then defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-2 in the National League Championship Series.

The Yankees were heavy favorites in the match-up. They had dominated the league throughout the year, with 114 regular-season wins. They ended up sweeping the Padres, four games to none.
