Segmentation
of Broadcast Data
Second Passing Segmented Material
When second passing material that has been through the first stage of
segmentation, there are is key items to check and look out for.
-
ALL sections of two declarative independent clauses, regardless of content
(unless they are commercials) are to be indicated.
-
CAREFULLY check all the boundaries, but do not make random, unnecessary
miscellaneous changes. For instance, changing a boundary that removes or
excludes a fraction of a second of breath - not necessary. Or changing
a non-story mark to more accurately indicate the start of a commercial.
-
CLEANUP ALL possible boundary correction areas. For instance, remove
(indicate as <sn) the reporter introductions before the actual story
report starts.
-
Check to ensure that <su areas are correct,
LISTEN to boundaries to ensure that ALL boundaries were indicated
NOTE - There have been cases where segmenters have only used the existing
<sx's as guides to indicate the boundaries - check the stories,
listen to the start and end of sections to ensure that they are correct.
These errors may be later revealed during the labeling process, but those
cases should not slip though this stage.
