Topic Detection & Tracking
Principal Investigator's Meeting

Enclosed is information about the TDT PI Meeting that will be held on
28 and 29 June at the University of Maryland in College Park.

Our goals are to:
* Share technical information, ideas, insight
* Benchmark interim performance
* Iron out issues with TDT3 tasks, metrics, data,
annotation, and the evaluation process and software.
* Decide plans and actions for the second dry run and
the final evaluation
Experiments with Mandarin data will be of special interest.

Attendees:
We are expecting 2-3 people per research site, 5 people from the LDC,
5 people from NIST, plus several technical people from sponsor/customer
agencies. If that presents any problems, please let me know.

Instructions to Research Sites:
Please prepare one or more presentations on your work so far (one
presentation for each task on which you are working). Each presentation
should include a description of technical approach, research information,
and insights gained. Also, any issues that need group discussion and
resolution should be identified. The presentations will be grouped
according to TDT task, and each site will be given 20 minutes (including
questions) for each presentation. If you have done anything special with
respect to Mandarin (i.e., going beyond just working with the MT output),
please let me know so that I can allot you extra time.

Instructions to LDC and NIST:
You will have varying amounts of time as indicated in the tentative
agenda below. Please cover the appropriate ground in each presentation.

Handouts:
Please bring 45 copies of your slides to share with the other attendees.
If you are giving more than one presentation, please segregate your slides
by presentation. (Two slides per side and two sides per page would help.)
Put a section label (e.g., "TRACKING") in front of each set of slides and
punch them for inclusion in standard 3-hole binders. Turn them in to the
University of Maryland people first thing Monday morning, and they will
assemble packages for everyone during the opening talks.

Logistics:
Our hosts at the University of Maryland will soon provide detailed
information about lodging in the area, where to park on campus, where the
meeting will be held, etc. They will also describe the meeting room,
which is well-equipped for computer-based presentations.

Demonstrations:
We have budgeted time for demonstrations, but have not selected them.
Please let me know if you have something that would be of interest to this
audience.
