TDT-3 Dry Run Workshop
University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742
June 28-29, 1999
The first TDT-3 dry run workshop will be held in room 1410 of the Computer
and Space Sciences Building (CSS 1410) at the University of Maryland. We
plan to start at 8 AM each morning. The meeting room provides 24 computer
workstations, with two chairs at each. We can thus accommodate up to 48
people (plus a few more lining the walls). Please send an e-mail to
rflick@umiacs.umd.edu giving the names and affiliations of the people coming
from your organization and list the names the way you would like them to
appear on their badges. Please send us this information NOW so that we can
arrange for an adequate number of chairs, meals, etc.
Presenters must bring 45 paper copies of their slides, three hole punched.
Please print no fewer than two slides per page. Print both front and back if you
can. We will provide binders and will do the collating during the first talks.
If you present from powerpoint or HTML, you may bring your presentation on disk
(zip disk is okay) or have it available by FTP or the web. We will ask you
to transfer it to a central directory that we will place on the web if you
agree to make your presentation public.
Facilities:
The meeting room provides Mac Power PC computers at every desk. The
computers normally run Windows 95 using a quite stable PC emulator, but can
be booted in Mac mode upon request. X-Windows may also be available upon
request, although you should let us know in advance if you plan to use it so
that we can configure a machine for you. Any computer display can be
duplicated on all of the computer screens in the room and on one of the two
1024x768 projectors in the front of the room. The other 1024x768 projector
can display from a single computer, so it is possible to project two screens
simultaneously. VHS video cassettes can also be shown on either projector
and an integrated sound system is provided. Audio tape replay can be
arranged if requested in advance. The room is configured with a group
decision support system that can be used to capture (and, to some extent,
arrange) simultaneous text entries from every terminal. Limited use of a
local printer is possible, but use of a copier would require a five minute
walk.
The room is on 100 Mb/sec Ethernet, with good connectivity to the Internet.
Local file storage is available. A full set of network applications is
provided at every desk (telnet, ftp, web browsers, netmeeting, etc). Local
e-mail accounts are not normally provided, but can be arranged if requested
in advance. The meeting room is configured to record sessions on both
videotape and RealVideo, and is capable of live RealVideo broadcasts if you
have colleagues that are unable to join us but would like to view a session
or two. However, after a couple of hours (or minutes!) that small screen
becomes annoying. We can arrange to have a phone in the control room for
local calls; long distance calls can be made with a calling card.
Alternatively, you can use the single pay phone in the hall or take the same
five minute walk that you would need to do for the copier. Apparently,
someone forgot about the more classic technologies :-!
Meals and Refreshments:
Refreshments will be available beginning at 7 AM each morning and over
breaks in the atrium on the second floor of the Computer and Space Sciences
Building. Directions to find this the first morning are provided below.
Arrangements have been made at Adele's restaurant for a buffet lunch (around
$9) each day. The restaurant is on campus and is about a seven minute walk
from the meeting room. Dinner on Monday night will be at Sir Walter
Raleigh's, which is on Greenbelt Road, about a ten minute drive from the
campus. Directions will be provided at the workshop.
Metro Directions:
Take the Green Line to the College Park Station. During rush hour, the
Green Line goes directly from Metro Center to College Park; at other times,
you will have to change from the Red Line at Fort Totten. There is a
University shuttle bus that goes from the metro station to the campus that
is free for everyone. The Shuttle runs every 15 minutes, starting at 7 AM,
and leaves from the ShuttleUM Bus bay at the Metro station. Get off at the
first stop inside the campus gate at the "Big M" traffic circle. Follow
general directions from the traffic circle. If you prefer to walk, exit the
station on the same side as your arriving train and walk under the tracks
along the sidewalk to the University. This will take you to the same point
as the driving directions, which you should then follow. Allow 30 minutes
and bring a change of clothes if it is humid :-! You can also usually grab
a cab at the same station exit.
Driving Directions:
>From BWI Airport: Take I-195 West to I-95 South, and then follow the
general directions. Allow 40 minutes during non-rush hours.
>From Washington Reagan National Airport: Take I-395 north to I-295 North to
New York Avenue North to the Baltimore Washington Parkway North to I-95
North and then follow the general directions. Allow 40 minutes during
non-rush hours.
>From Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD): Take the Dulles Access
Road East to I-495 North then East, which joins I-95. Then follow the
general directions. Allow 50 minutes during non-rush hours.
General Directions: From I-95/I-495 (Northeast of Washington), take the
Route 1 South exit for about 3 miles. The entrance to the campus will be on
the right after a Jerry's Sub Shop. Enter in the left lane and proceed
straight to the "Big M" traffic circle. Exit the circle after ¼ turn (90
degrees) and go to the stop sign. Turn left, and then take another quick
left into the parking garage. If you arrive between 7:15-8:15, stop on the
way in to pick up a (free) parking pass from a student that will greet you
there. At other times, parking passes will be available at the check-in
desk and you will need to walk back out to hang it on your mirror. To get
to the meeting room, exit the garage the way you entered, cross the street,
and walk to your left (up a slight hill). The Computer and Space Sciences
Building will be on your right as you walk. Proceed to the main entrance,
which will be on the far side of a fairly large square. If it looks new,
you are in the right place. Our meeting room is on the first floor,
slightly to the left as you enter. The refreshments, where most of us will
be before 8 AM, are on the second floor. Take the elevator up one floor,
turn left, and follow the noise.
Questions and Special assistance:
Becky Flick (rflick@umiacs.umd.edu) is coordinating the logistics
for the workshop and Gina Levow (gina@umiacs.umd.edu) is coordinating
Maryland's TDT team. One of them should be able to help with any special
arrangements that are required. We look forward to seeing you at Maryland!
