Call for papers for special issue:
Filtering
Special issue editor: Stephen Robertson (email ser@microsoft.com)
-------------------------------------------------------
Filtering has been the subject of much recent work, at TREC and
elsewhere.
One of the main characteristics of filtering is the possibility of
extensive feedback, of relevance and other information, and therefore
of
machine learning from this feedback. Another is that both information
needs and the characteristics of incoming documents may change over
time.
The focus of the special issue will be the filtering task as defined and
evaluated over successive rounds of TREC. However, the issue is not
restricted to TREC participants or to the reporting of TREC
experiments.
The intention is to address the issues around the formulation of the
filtering task or tasks, the design of experiments to evaluate the
performance of filtering systems, the development of models (or the
refinement of existing models from IR or elsewhere) for effective
filtering
systems, and reports of experiments and results.
Filtering is taken to mean the selection of new documents from an
incoming
stream, on behalf of a user in relation to an ongoing need or
requirement.
The following are included: Routing, batch filtering and adaptive
filtering (as defined at TREC); topic detection and tracking, with
specific
reference to topic tracking (as defined at TDT); the traditional
concept of
selective dissemination of information (SDI); and collaborative
filtering.
The final deadline for paper submission is ***11 May 2001***. However,
intending authors are strongly advised to contact the editor well in
advance of this date, with a proposed title and some indication of
coverage. The editor intends to plan the issue and submissions which
fit
in the plan are much more likely to be accepted. Advisory date by
which to
contact the editor: ***16 March 2001***.
