Folks,

First, please accept our apologies for the rough start and the spurious "test"
messages -- and our thanks to those who sent helpful responses.

It should now be the case that:

- Messages from people who are not subscribed will not be circulated to the
entire list; instead, these will go to the list owner (me), and I will ignore
them or forward them to the list, as appropriate.

- You will find instructions for unsubscribing from tdt-distrib attached at
the bottom of each message sent to the list.

- Requests for subscribing, unsubscribing, and related queries about list
maintenance will be handled by sending email to <majordomo@ldc.upenn.edu>

For those not familiar with using a majordomo list service, here is a brief
summary of commands that can be sent to <majordomo@ldc.upenn.edu> -- each of
the following lines (excluding the footnote numbers in parentheses) can be used
in the body of an email message, to perform the desired function, and you can
include multiple commands in one message:

(1a) subscribe tdt-distrib
(1b) subscribe tdt-distrib other@email.address

(2a) unsubscribe tdt-distrib
(2b) unsubscribe tdt-distrib other@email.address

(3) help
(4) info tdt-distrib
(5) lists
(6) which
(7) who tdt-distrib

Notes on the majordomo commands:

(1a,b) requests to subscribe will be followed up by a request for confirmation
from the majordomo; if you supplied an email address other than the one used
in the initial "subscribe" message, the confirmation request will go to the
address that you specified. The majordomo must receive an authorization
message from the address being subscribed in order to complete the process.

(Note that the majordomo's "real" address is "@cis.upenn.edu" -- you'll see
this in responses from the service -- we have created "majordomo@ldc" as a
helpful alias, and the two forms are fully interchangeable.)

(2a) removing yourself from the list requires no further action
(2b) if you try to remove an address from the list other than the one being
used to send this request, the list manager (me) will need to send an approval
message to the majordomo -- if you forget to copy me in this case, I'll get
back to you (the person who sent the original request) for clarification.

(3) sends you a very complete listing of how majordomo works
(4) sends you a very terse report that this is the "TDT" list
(5) provides names of other lists handled by this majordomo
(6) lets you know all the lists here that include your address
(7) lets you know who else is currently subscribed to tdt-distrib (if anyone
has a problem with that, let me know, and I'll see if there's something we can
do about it)

I have updated the instructions on the LDC's TDT3 "home" page accorgingly
(www.ldc.upenn.edu/Project/TDT3/). The archive of past messages will continue
to be maintained at this web site, not via the majordomo.

As always, you can continue to send me any questions or requests if you have
problems, and I'll be happy to help.

Dave Graff
