TDT-interested folk,

I am writing to encourage as many of you as possible to attend the TDT
2001 workshop on Nov 12-13. One important function of the workshop is
to discuss what people did this year for the evaluation, and I expect
we'll spend 1/2 to 2/3 of a day on that topic.

However, a topic that is at least as important is planning for next
year's TDT 2002 evaluation. This will be an important year because:

(1) we will have a brand new corpus (TDT-4) for evaluation

(2) we will (finally!!) have the TDT-2 and TDT-3 corpora for
training and development

(3) we will be introducing Arabic as a third language (nice
timing, huh?). Yes, there are currently plans to create
some Arabic topics in the training data.

(4) there is strong interest in refocusing effort, including
stronger emphasis on the "novelty detection" sort of tasks

My goal is for us to leave the meeting with the TDT 2002 evaluation
plan well in hand so that we can all start research as soon as
possible. We will need to resolve how the tasks should/will shift,
what resources need to be found and made available to the community,
and what our target timeline will be.

I intend to present a strawman position to use as a framework for
discussion. Please come to the meeting to ensure that TDT 2002 is
everything you want it to be.

You can get more information about registering at:

http://www.nist.gov/speech/tests/tdt/tdt2001/announce.htm

Note that the hotel rooms are held until Oct 28, and that TREC
pre-registration *must* be done by Oct 30th. (If you are not normally
eligible to attend TREC and want to, you must contact Jon Fiscus.
TREC is a participants-only workshop, but TREC and TDT have an
understanding...)

Hope to see you there....
