TDT Mandarin Newswire Sources

Overview

The Xinhua Newswire Service originates in mainland China and is recieved at the LDC via a standard telephone modem, which connects with a Xinhua service provider in New York City on a daily basis.

The Zaobao News Service originates in Singapore, and distributes its material via the World Wide Web (from http://zaobao.com.sg/). The LDC uses a web harvesting process to collect and archive novel news story postings on a daily bases.

Both of these newswire sources provide their text using GB character encoding, with conventional punctuation and without word segmentation. However, they often use ASCII numeral strings to represent quantities (e.g. "55%", "8000", etc), and sometimes provide the English form (in ASCII) of proper names, in cases where there is no established convention for the corresponding GB transliteration.
