Car Bomb in Jerusalem

Jeff Feldman

Summary

On Novemver 6th, 1998, at around 10 AM, a car bomb exploded in a Jerusalem open air marketplace, wounding 21 and killing both bombers. This bombing was an other attempt to upset the Middle east peace process. The attack is the third attack by Hamas in three weeks, and the second suicide bombing since the singning of the Wye river accord. The attack caused a temporary freeze in Middle East peace negotiations when Netanyahu's cabinet suspended ratification of Wye river accord.
The Wye rive accord calls for Israel to withdraw its troops from land in the West Bank, giving the Palestinians control of about 40 percent of the area. In return, the Palestinians agreed to a comprehenive security plan to protect Israel from terrorist attacks by Islamic militants, and to remove part of the PLO charter that called for the destruction of the state of Israel.
