LDC ACE Annotation Tool for ACE_2004_Pilot_Corpus_V1.2

LDC is distributing a version of LDC's ACE annotation tool for use with the ACE_2004_Pilot_Corpus_V1.2 corpus. The purpose of this distribution is to allow researchers browse the annotated files using the annotation tool.

Currently, there are three binary pacakges available:

How to unpack the distribution:

(It requires about 80 MB of disk space when unpacked.)

On Windows, zip utilities, such as WinZIP, will unpack the distribution, and creates a directory named LDC_ACETool_jan_2004.

On Solaris/Linux, the following commands will unpack the distribution in the current directory.

gzip -cd LDC_ACETool_jan_2004-*-tar.gz | tar cfv -

This will create a directory named LDC_ACETool_jan_2004.

How to start the annotation tool:

On Windows, double clicking on the aceTool icon (or the aceTool.lnk file) will start the annotation tool.

On Solaris/Linux, the script named aceTool in the LDC_ACETool_jan_2004/bin directory will start the annotation tool.

How to open an annotation file:

Files with extensions "-pp.ag.xml" in the V1.2 ACE Pilot Corpus are the annotation files that can be viewed with this annotation tool.

To open an annotation file, you can choose below from the menu bar.

File->"Open Annotation File"

Once the annotation file is opened, the corresponding source text file will be displayed if it exists in the same directory as the annotation file.

How to switch between modes:

The annotation tool has four modes: EDT, EDC, RDC and LNK.  Modes can be switched from the "Mode" menu in the menu bar.

NOTE: swtiching between modes in the Windows tool currently causes a temporary display problem, but all functionalities should be there.  We are currently investigating the problem.

EDT mode operations:

  • Clicking the mouse left button on an underline in the text display or an entity mention in the entity table will highlight the entity mention in the text display and the table. It will also show the extent, head extent, type and role in the "Current Mention" display.

EDC mode operations:

  • The entity mentions created at the EDT annotation stage are shown with gray underlines in the text display. Clicking on them will display information about them in a pop-up window.
  • The event mention extents and anchors are displayed with color-coded underlines. Clicking on them will highlight the corresponding event mentions in the event table.
  • Clicking on event mentions in the event table will highlight the corresponding event mentions in the text display. Double clicking event mentions in the event table will bring up a role assignment window, which displays extents of event mention participants. Please click on "Cancel" to close the Window.

RDC mode operations:

  • The entity mentions created at the EDT annotation stage are shown with gray underlines in the text display. The event mentions created at the EDC annotation stage are shown with black underlines. Clicking on them will display information about them.
  • The relation mention extents are displayed with color-coded underlines. Clicking on them will highlight the corresponding relation mentions in the Entity-Entity relation table.
  • Clicking on relation mentions in the Entity-Entity relation table will highlight the corresponding relation mentions in the text display. Double-clicking on the "ARG1/2" cells of relation mentions in the Entity-Entity relation table will bring up a window that shows full extents of the arguments. Please click on "Cancel" to close the window.
  • The Event-Entity relation table is used to create relations between event mentions and entity mentions. The entity mentions are actually saved as event mention participants of the event mentions. These are different from the annotations created in the EDC mode in that the extent of the entity mention (event mention participant) is not within the extent of the event mention. The current tool displays them in the EDC mode when these annotations are saved, and then the annotation files are re-opened.

LNK mode operations:

NOTE: We are currently redesigning this interface to allow a better view of composite entities and entities.
  • Clicking on the header marked "CE ID" will sort entities in the order of the composite entity ID.

CAUTION: sorting will take time; please click it only ONCE.

  • Clicking on a composite ID on the entity table or the link table will highlight all rows with the same composite ID.
  • Clicking on an entity ID in the LINK table will highlight all corresponding entities in the entity table.

Distribution:

This distribution is for the ACE research community only.
